What Should You Keep in Your Storm Shelter Emergency Kit?

A storm shelter is one of the safest places to be during a tornado or strong storm. But being safe also means being prepared. That’s why every storm shelter should have an emergency kit. This kit helps you stay comfortable, safe, and ready if you need to stay in the shelter for a few hours—or even longer.

First, pack water and snacks. Clean drinking water is very important. Try to store at least one gallon of water per person. You should also have snacks like granola bars, dried fruit, crackers, or canned food. Choose food that doesn’t need to be cooked. Don’t forget a manual can opener if you bring canned food.

Next, include flashlights and extra batteries. Storms often cause power outages. Flashlights help you see clearly in the dark. A battery-powered radio is also helpful. It allows you to listen to weather updates and emergency news, even if your phone isn’t working.

Your emergency kit should also have a first aid kit. Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, any daily medications, and any medical supplies specific to your family’s needs. If someone in your family uses an inhaler or insulin, keep extras in your kit.

Don’t forget hygiene and comfort items. Pack items like wet wipes, tissues, hand sanitizer, and trash bags. Also include blankets, extra clothes, and maybe even a small pillow. These can help keep you warm and comfortable if you’re in the shelter for a while.

Other useful items include:

  • Copies of ID cards and important documents
  • A phone charger (battery-powered or solar)
  • A whistle (to signal for help)
  • A multi-tool or small toolbox
  • Paper and a pen for taking notes

If you have kids, you might want to add some small toys, coloring books, or games to keep them calm and entertained. If you have pets, make sure you pack some pet food, water, and a leash or carrier.

Check your storm shelter kit every few months. Make sure food and batteries are still good, and replace anything that’s missing or expired.

Having a well-stocked emergency kit in your storm shelter helps you stay calm and prepared when bad weather strikes. It’s a small step that can make a big difference.
